Even though many people are concerned about the possible contaminants in their drinking water, many are not well informed and simply rely on claims made by the home water treatment manufacturers. Some of the products are not effective and some might not even be safe to use. People need to educate themselves about the quality of water in the area they live to be able to identify what kind of contaminants are present in their drinking water.
There are different kinds of contaminants such as lead, parasites, DBP, arsenic, aluminium. Once you have identified most possible contaminants in the water of your area, it is easier to make an informed decision during the purchase of a whole house water filter. There are plenty of products with a widely differing qualities and technologies.
Some of the most common technologies include:
1. water filtration (Standard 42 and 53)
2. Softener (Standard 44)
3. Ultraviolet treatment (Standard 55)
4. Reverse Osmosis (Standard 58)
5. Distillers (Standard 62)
There are two common styles of water treatment devices POE and POU systems. POU stands for Point of Use system. POU systems treat water that are delivered to a single tap such as a kitchen sink faucet. One example of a POU system is a counter top water filter system that is connected to a kitchen sink faucet. Whole house water filter systems falls under POE systems or Point of Entry systems as these systems treat water entering a residence. A POE system is usually installed after the water meter. Thus water is filtered before it comes out of a single faucet in the house, be it in the shower, toilet or kitchen sink. The filter, depending on the type used, can remove chemicals, bacteria, viruses, minerals, sediment, bad taste. Make sure you check the product information to see whether the water filter system you choose is certified by an independent tester such as NSF. You can pick which standard of NSF certification complies the best to the contaminants you want to remove.
